Readers' Responses to Deadline

I’ve been re-reading the book Deadline by Randy Alcorn. It’s a novel that is part who-done-it and part theology. I didn’t think those two writing styles could be combined, but if you ever find yourself looking for a good read—check it out. It’s a page-turner. My ADD brain starts with the concepts of the novel and somewhere down the line took a hard right, leaving me to dwell on the following concept. — M. H.

I've read a lot of Christian books over the years and none of them have got me thinking about my walk with the Lord as Randy's books have! Deadline and Dominion get an A+ from me. Also the prolife books have opened my eyes to a lot I didn't know about the prolife position...Thank you for speaking up for the voiceless.

I am planning to order Randy's hardcover books after I get out of prison, as my institution does not allow them. That gives me something positive to spend my money on instead of drugs! - A Prisoner

I have an aunt who is probably the most avid reader I know.  She basically spends every waking moment reading.

Recently, I bought her Deadline and mailed it to her.  She is not a Christian, and since she worked at a newspaper for many years, I thought it would be a great witness to her.  She told us: "As far as the book goes, I have never read anything like it!  It is the best book I have ever read!"

That's quite a statement coming from someone who has read thousands of books in her lifetime.  My prayer, of course, is that she will come to know Christ as a result of this. We found out she went right out and bought Dominion and Deception. - S. R.

The last copy of Deadline we had we gave to our younger son who is in his twenties and in the Army. He is looking to go to Afghanistan in a few months. After reading Deadline he gave his heart back to the Lord and is now walking strong in his faith again. Deadline is a powerful book. — L. K.

Your book Deadline seemed theologically on the money, and—as a work of literature—colorful, vivid and precise.  It described characters both vivid and unusual, and understandable and easily identified with.  Perhaps the most important element was its ability to force readers to think, or rethink what they believe and why they believe it. — J. H.

I am almost finished with your book, Deadline and have felt a nudging to say thanks. I often leave Bible study very hurt and discouraged from hearing all of the liberal agenda that our new/young Christians are so absorbed in. Your book has almost been like a friend to me these past weeks. God has really used it to encourage me that we are not alone. He has also used it to give me ideas of how to handle certain subjects. Thank you. God has ministered to me in a desperately needed way through you. — S. B.

An excellent work of fiction book by a true scholar. My wife and I have been reading Heaven and enjoying it immensely, so I was very eager to check out his fiction works.

Alcorn makes a lot of thought-provoking points to Christians and others alike. There are a number of passages presented in the form of letters, newspaper columns and articles which could be easily used as text materials for advocacy groups. Every believer with a cause should check out his material here.

I was particularly struck by a passage that basically suggested that liberals have success in the media because they know how to relate to editors, writers and publishers, and that conservatives generally don’t. Alcorn’s not-so-subtle implication is that if we want to get our message out more effectively, we’d better learn how to relate and speak on their terms. (This is just one of many subtopics of the book.)

His descriptions of Heaven are incredibly thought-provoking. Again, having read Heaven, it was a delight to read a narrative account of Heaven.

My only criticism, shallow as it may be, is that the book is pretty long. Alcorn covers a lot of ground here in terms of storyline, politics, theology, etc. and it may have been too much for one book. Having said that, I would highly recommend this book! — S. B.

I just finished reading Deadline and it was astounding. I was privileged to find the book as I was "shopping" in one of our disaster stores right after Hurricane Katrina. I am a disabled mother with Narcolepsy and lost everything I owned and am now living in a FEMA travel trailer. As I read Deadline I found so much joy and harmony in your words.

In my hometown life is not easy. We are still trying to pick up after Katrina. But reading your words brought such quietness and peace to my life. Your book reminded me that God is still on His throne and is looking lovingly at each of his children. It reminded me that although our lives may be changed, God never changes and He keeps us safe and that we will not be here always. There is a home on the other side much better than we can ever imagine. — E.W., Mississippi

No wonder it was on the Bestseller list for 36 months! This was such an exciting, suspenseful, Christian mystery novel, containing wonderful and thorough character development. One really gets drawn into the story of these 3 guys and their families. The moral and social issues that are examined are thought-provoking. The author succeeded on so many levels to make this book a joy to read. — C. H.
